The Microsoft Israel Research & Development Center (ILDC) was established in 1991 and is the company’s first R&D center outside of the United States. As one of Microsoft’s four strategic global development centers, it houses various product groups that lead a significant portion of the company’s core innovation and global products used by hundreds of millions of costumers globally. Led by Michal Braverman-Blumenstyk, CVP at Microsoft Corporation, General Manager of Israel Research & Development Center, and CTO of the Microsoft Security division. Michal founded the Microsoft Israel Cybersecurity Center in 2013, initiating and driving some of Microsoft’s most advanced security products and impactful technologies.
Through organic growth and nine acquisitions of Israeli start-ups over the last few years, the number of employees at the Development Center has grown significantly, becoming a major force in the fields of cybersecurity and AI within Microsoft. About half of the Development Center’s employees are involved in cybersecurity and play a crucial role in making Microsoft a leading global cybersecurity company.
In addition to ILDC being a long-time global leader in Cybersecurity, nowadays it leads the intersection of Large Language Models (LLM) and Security. As Microsoft is a groundbreaking global leader in the Generative AI revolution, the ILDC has become a significant contributor in the development and integration of advanced Gen-AI technologies within Microsoft's portfolio products, used by hundreds of millions worldwide. In 2023, the first three Microsoft products that incorporated GPT capabilities were developed by ILDC.
Artificial intelligence is the defining technology of our era, and at Microsoft we are optimistic about what it can and will do for people, industries and society at large. Microsoft's advances in artificial intelligence are based on the company's vision to democratize its AI breakthroughs to improve productivity and help every person and organization on the planet achieve more.
With offices spread from North to South, located in Herzliya, Tel Aviv, Haifa, Nazareth and Be’er Sheva, Microsoft’s R&D Center also serves as an anchor to the local industry and startup community, as the home to Microsoft for Startups, an organization that provides comprehensive support to help startups develop and grow their consumer base; and Microsoft Reactor, which leads developer relationships and offers a place of study and inspiration for the Israeli Startup ecosystem.
